Celebrated by the government, the succession of records in the trade balance diverts attention from the difficulty of Brazil to diversify foreign trade with the rest of the world. To reach the historic mark of US$ 339.7 billion exported in 2023, Brazil relied on China and its inexhaustible appetite for commodities. China is the first country to buy more than US$ 100 billion from Brazil in a year - more precisely, US$ 104.3 billion in 2023 -, US$ 14.9 billion more than the already significant figure of almost US$ 90 billion, registered in 2022. For foreign trade experts, even with the trend of slowing the Chinese economy, this trade dependence is not a cause for concern for the time being. Brazil, they estimate, should remain a pillar in China’s food security, while the expansion of the Chinese middle class opens up opportunities to enrich the agenda with its largest trading partner.
